Spectrum Vascular has acquired Piccolo Medical, a developer of FDA-cleared catheter guidance technology, in a move aimed at strengthening its vascular access offerings.

The acquisition centers on Piccolo’s PM2+ system, which uses proprietary blood flow sensing to enable real-time catheter tip placement guidance. The technology is designed to improve accuracy during catheter insertion and potentially eliminate the need for confirmatory chest X-rays.

Piccolo has also recently advanced its next-generation Nav+Stylet technology, following initial successful patient placements, which the companies see as a step toward broader commercialization of advanced navigation tools in vascular access procedures.

Spectrum Vascular said the deal will help accelerate integration of Piccolo’s platform with its existing product portfolio and expand its presence in next-generation vascular access solutions. Piccolo CEO Augustus Shanahan is expected to join Spectrum alongside the existing team.

Spectrum CEO Kenneth Miller said:

“By combining Piccolo’s breakthrough navigation technology with Spectrum’s vascular access portfolio and commercial reach, we are uniquely positioned to accelerate innovation, improve patient care, and redefine the standard of care for clinicians worldwide.”

The acquisition reflects a broader push to modernize catheter placement workflows and improve efficiency and safety in hospital vascular access procedures.
