Masimo has received FDA clearance for an AI-enabled opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD) detection capability designed for its Radius VSM wearable continuous monitoring system.

The technology uses Masimo’s smartSET pulse oximetry platform and advanced pattern recognition to analyze continuous patient data and help clinicians identify early signs of respiratory compromise in patients receiving opioid therapy.

The OIRD feature adds automated alerts to Radius VSM, aiming to provide earlier awareness of deteriorating respiratory status and support faster clinical intervention.

Masimo Chief Medical Officer Dr. Basil Matta said:

“With OIRD detection, Masimo is bringing advanced pattern recognition to continuous, wearable monitoring to help clinicians identify earlier changes in a patient’s respiratory status…”

The clearance represents the first hospital monitoring application of Masimo’s AI-based OIRD detection technology and expands the role of continuous monitoring from measurement toward predictive clinical insights.
