The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance to Turbett Surgical’s improved line of Instrument Pods, notably the TS1500, TS1200, and TS1000.
According to the company, this clearance aligns with its focus on safety, performance, and innovation in the management of surgical instruments.

The newly validated performance claims for the company’s Instrument Pods include an increase in the weight capacity for the TS1200, currently cleared for up to 300lb, claiming to be greater than doubling its earlier limit.
This enhancement enables the management of greater and heavier instrument sets with flexibility.
Additionally, the systems currently provide backing for a broader range of lumen types, which include both rigid and flexible alternatives, with specific validations for 0.7mm × 500mm and 1.0mm × 850mm lengths, adding “versatility” for facilities that handle fragile instrumentation and scopes, stated the company.
Surgical centres and hospitals are expected to gain from this improved “reliability” and usability of the Instrument Pod systems.
These purpose-built enhancements are designed to meet the needs of modern surgical teams, offering smoother procedures and enhanced results via “simplified” instrument management.
The Turbett Pod systems also claim to minimise environmental influence and lessen expenses by reducing the use of surgical blue wrap, resulting in a waste management programme.
They are tailored to decrease physical strain and recurring tasks, helping surgical teams retrieve time while meeting the requirements of surgical procedures.
Utilising Instrument Pods in operating rooms can significantly streamline the process, potentially freeing up time to schedule an additional surgical procedure each day.
According to the company, the Instrument Pod does not have reusable gaskets, which “simplifies” the inspection process and eliminates the need for the maintenance that other containers usually require.
The design of the pod features a fully visible interior surface that facilitates easy cleaning and inspection. The pods are validated for both manual cleaning and automated cart washer systems.
