Surgical Planning Associates received FDA 510(k) clearance for its HipInsight 2.0 mixed-reality guidance system. Boston-based Surgical Planning Associates developed the system for hip arthroplasty in collaboration with orthopedic giant Zimmer Biomet. It provides support for the essential steps of both primary and complex revision arthroplasty.

HipInsight effectively gives surgeons “X-ray vision” to see detailed, sequential three-dimensional information in and around the patient’s hip joint. It now enables the method of overlaying the powerful digital content onto the patient. This makes the workflow more wide-ranging, seamless and applicable to any surgical technique. Using mixed-reality display eyeglass lenses, surgeons can gather 3D information without taking their eyes off the patient.
Surgeons who want to use X-rays in surgery can still use the technology to generate “future X-rays” in advance. These also display the desired surgical result, according to a news release.
The mixed-reality device can display the future X-rays and project them onto actual intraoperative X-rays. This way, the surgeon can see a live comparison during surgery. The system can also provide rapid assessments for leg length and hip width change, Surgical Planning Associates said.
“Our companies have been able to work synergistically through our exclusive collaboration to successfully support clinical use of this fast-evolving, transformative technology,” said Zimmer Biomet’s marketing VP, Steve Vankoski.
